Build a Safe and Confident Foundation
Foundations and Comfort is the first step in the Journey Academy training program. This class is designed to help students become comfortable handling a handgun while developing the fundamental habits needed for safe and responsible firearm ownership.
Students receive hands-on instruction in a controlled learning environment where they can become familiar with the firearm without the pressure of immediately going to the range.
The focus of this class is not speed. It is safety, understanding, proper technique, and becoming comfortable with the firearm in your hands.
Topics May Include:
The fundamental rules of firearm safety
Understanding the basic parts and functions of a semi-automatic handgun
Proper and safe firearm handling
Identifying and using the firearm's controls
Establishing a proper shooting grip
Building a stable shooting stance
Proper muzzle and trigger-finger discipline
Safely loading and unloading a handgun
Inserting and removing a magazine
Safely manipulating the slide
Understanding how a handgun operates
Introduction to sight alignment and sight picture
Introduction to trigger control
Developing safe habits before live-fire training
Students are encouraged to ask questions and work through areas where they may feel uncomfortable or unsure. The goal is for each student to leave the class with a much better understanding of their firearm and increased confidence handling it safely.
By the End of This Class
Students should have a stronger understanding of handgun safety and operation and should be more comfortable performing basic firearm manipulations under instructor supervision.
Foundations and Comfort prepares students for Class 2: Maintenance and Muscle Memory.

Our focus is a strong foundation: understanding your responsibilities, asking good questions, and learning in a supportive environment.
Students should bring: - Your personal firearm, if you own one. Bringing your own handgun gives you the opportunity to become more familiar and comfortable with the firearm you plan to use. Please bring it unloaded and safely secured. - Do not own a firearm yet? That is completely OK. You do not need to purchase or own a firearm before attending Journey Academy. Training firearms will be available for students to use during class. - Pen or pencil for notes and workbook activities. Workbook Provided: Each student will receive a Journey Academy workbook during Class 1. Keep your workbook and bring it with you to the remaining Journey Academy classes.
No prior firearms experience or training is required. Foundations and Comfort is designed to be beginner-friendly and is the starting point for the Journey Academy program.
