The Complete Armed Security Path brings together the core-subject, arrest-authority, and handgun courses required for the standard handgun-based Virginia armed security officer training pathway. It is designed for students beginning their security training who need all three components. Additional training may be required for access to other firearms while on duty.
01E — Security Officer Core Subjects: 18 hours of instruction. Covers security officer duties, applicable laws and regulations, ethics, patrol, access control, communication, documentation, emergency procedures, confrontation management, and use of force. A written examination requires at least 70%. No range qualification is required for 01E.
05E — Armed Security Officer Arrest Authority: 8 hours of instruction. Covers arrest powers, policies, and procedures. A written examination requires at least 70%. No range qualification is required for 05E.
75E — Security Officer Handgun: 24 hours of instruction. Covers handgun safety and handling, maintenance, marksmanship fundamentals, use of force, liability, and judgmental decision-making. A written examination requires at least 70% before range training. Handgun range qualification requires at least 75%.
The listed instructional hours exclude examinations, required practical exercises, and range qualification. Students must successfully complete each included course’s requirements.
Our focus is a strong foundation: understanding your responsibilities, asking good questions, and learning in a supportive environment.

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID, a pen and notebook, your DCJS identification number if already assigned, and any enrollment documents requested by the school.
For the handgun range portion, bring a handgun, a belt with a strong-side directional-draw holster, and three magazines or two speed loaders, as appropriate. DCJS’s standard range-equipment list specifies 100 rounds of ammunition; confirm whether additional ammunition is required for your scheduled training.
Bring eye and hearing protection, closed-toe shoes, and suitable range clothing. Confirm the firearm, equipment, ammunition, and any loan arrangements with the instructor. Live ammunition must not enter the classroom firearms-training environment.
This package is intended for entry-level students and includes 01E; previous completion of that course is not expected. The school will confirm your course sequence and enrollment requirements.
DCJS registration applicants must be at least 18 years old, be a United States citizen or legal resident alien, and satisfy the applicable registration and application requirements. Students participating in firearms training must also be legally eligible to possess firearms and ammunition.
Confirm your date, location, and preparation instructions with the training team before attending.
