Students must complete the instructional requirements, pass the firearms written examination, and successfully complete the required range training and handgun qualification. This course is separate from Security Officer Core Subjects and Armed Security Officer Arrest Authority.
24 hours of instruction, plus the written examination, required practical exercises, and range qualification.
Written examination: Required — 70% minimum. Students must pass before participating in firearms range training.
Range qualification: Required — 75% minimum.
Required familiarization and low-light range practice must also be completed, although those portions are not scored.
Our focus is a strong foundation: understanding your responsibilities, asking good questions, and learning in a supportive environment.
DCJS-specified range equipment: A handgun, a belt with a strong-side directional-draw holster, three magazines or two speed loaders, and ammunition. The state’s handgun range-equipment list specifies 100 rounds. Additional proposed school instructions: Bring a government-issued photo ID, your DCJS number if assigned, a pen and notebook, approved eye and hearing protection, closed-toe shoes, and clothing suitable for the range. Confirm the firearm, ammunition type, total ammunition quantity, and any equipment-loan arrangements with the instructor before class.
