09R · Advanced Handgun Retraining
Provided by Virginia Tactical Shooting Academy
Course description
Advanced Handgun Retraining provides the recurring advanced handgun training and requalification required for armed personal protection specialists and other eligible armed private-security registrants maintaining an advanced handgun designation. This is a retraining course, not a substitute for initial advanced handgun training.
Hours required: 8 hours of required retraining, excluding range qualification. The DCJS course outline divides the instruction into 4 hours of Legal Authority and Decision-Making and 4 hours of Handgun Safety, Marksmanship, and Skill Development. Allow additional time for testing and range qualification when planning attendance.
Written examination: Required for the firearms classroom component, with a minimum passing score of 70% before range training. This requirement comes from the general DCJS firearms-classroom testing rule, even though the short 09R course outline does not repeat the examination requirement.
Range qualification: Required, with a minimum passing score of 92% for advanced firearms range qualification. Students must complete the prescribed advanced handgun course of fire.
Students must complete all required instruction and successfully meet the applicable examination, practical, and range-qualification requirements. Missed instruction must be made up before training completion can be credited.
Learning with purpose.
Our focus is a strong foundation: understanding your responsibilities, asking good questions, and learning in a supportive environment.
What to bring
Students should bring:
- A valid government-issued photo ID
- Your DCJS registration and firearms-endorsement information
- Your endorsement expiration date
- Proof of previous advanced handgun training or qualification if requested
- A pen and notebook
For the range:
- Bring the handgun for which you need qualification
- The instructor-approved magazines or speed loaders
- Ammunition
- A suitable straight-draw hip holster for the advanced qualification exercises. Confirm equipment suitability and the required ammunition quantity with the school before class.
Bring eye and hearing protection, closed-toe shoes, and clothing appropriate for the range conditions. Follow the instructor’s check-in instructions; live ammunition must not enter the classroom firearms-training environment.
Prerequisites
This course is intended for existing armed personal protection specialists and other eligible armed registrants who have satisfied the applicable initial advanced handgun requirements and need advanced handgun retraining. Initial endorsement applicants must complete the appropriate entry-level training rather than use a retraining course as a substitute.
For ordinary firearms-endorsement renewal, retraining must be completed within the 90 days before the current endorsement expires. Contact the school before enrolling if your endorsement has expired or you missed that window. Under the regulation, missing the required retraining window means entry-level training requirements must be completed before applying for an active endorsement.
Students must remain legally eligible to possess firearms and ammunition.
Confirm your date, location, and preparation instructions with the training team before attending.
