Package benefits

The Professional Handgun Pair combines two DCJS handgun training courses into one progressive training package. Designed for eligible private security personnel pursuing entry-level and advanced handgun training, this package builds foundational firearm skills before advancing into more challenging firearms instruction and qualification.
07E — Entry-Level Handgun: 16 Hours of Instruction
This course covers handgun safety, firearm handling and maintenance, ammunition management, marksmanship fundamentals, range safety, low-light familiarization, use of force, legal liability, and judgmental shooting.
Written Examination: Required — minimum passing score of 70%.
Range Qualification: Required — minimum passing score of 75%.
Additional Requirements: Mandatory familiarization and low-light range practice.
09E — Advanced Handgun: 14 Hours of Instruction
This course builds upon entry-level handgun training with advanced marksmanship, firearms safety, concealed carry laws, civil and criminal liability, use of force, firearms considerations in close-protection operations, and advanced decision-making.
Written Examination: Required — minimum passing score of 70%.
Range Qualification: Required — minimum passing score of 92% on the prescribed advanced handgun qualification.
Important: Examination time and required range training and qualifications are additional to the listed classroom instructional hours. Both courses must be successfully completed to satisfy their respective training requirements.

Course description

Advanced Handgun is the DCJS advanced firearms course required for individuals pursuing an armed personal protection specialist firearms endorsement. It is also available as optional advanced training for other eligible armed registrants. The course builds on previously completed entry-level handgun training.
Instruction covers firearms safety, civil and criminal liability, concealed-carry law and authority, the role of firearms in close-protection operations, use of force, advanced marksmanship principles, and decision-making for personal protection specialists.
Hours required: 14 hours of advanced handgun classroom instruction, excluding the written examination. Required range training and qualification are additional; the advanced range-qualification standard does not prescribe a fixed minimum number of range hours.
Written examination: Required, with a minimum passing score of 70%. Students must pass before participating in firearms range training.
Range qualification: Required, with a minimum passing score of 92% on the Virginia private security advanced handgun course of fire. This is the advanced qualification standard—not the 75% standard used for entry-level handgun qualification.
Students must complete all required instruction and successfully meet the applicable examination, practical, and range-qualification requirements. Missed instruction must be made up before training completion can be credited.

Learning with purpose.

Our focus is a strong foundation: understanding your responsibilities, asking good questions, and learning in a supportive environment.

What to bring

Students should bring:

  • Bring a valid government-issued photo ID
  • Your DCJS registration information if already assigned, and any additional enrollment documents requested by the school
  • Proof of completion of 07E or 75E
  • A pen and notebook

For the range:

  • A suitable handgun
  • Ammunition
  • The magazines or speed loaders specified in the school’s equipment instructions.
  • The advanced course of fire specifies straight-draw hip holsters for its applicable range exercises; confirm your holster with the instructor before attending.

Bring eye and hearing protection, closed-toe shoes, and appropriate range clothing. Confirm the required ammunition quantity with the school before purchasing supplies.
Follow the instructor’s firearm check-in instructions. Live ammunition must not enter the classroom firearms-training environment.

Prerequisites

Successful completion of 07E — Entry-Level Handgun or 75E — Security Officer Handgun is required before 09E. DCJS explicitly identifies either course as an acceptable prerequisite. Submit your training documentation for review before enrollment.
Students must be legally eligible to possess firearms and ammunition.
Students pursuing personal protection specialist registration must also satisfy the separate category-specific training and registration requirements, including 32E — Personal Protection Specialist where applicable. 09E alone does not complete the personal protection specialist training pathway.

Confirm your date, location, and preparation instructions with the training team before attending.
