Handgun Retraining is the annual handgun refresher and requalification course for eligible armed private-security personnel renewing their firearms endorsement. Students complete the required firearms retraining and demonstrate continued proficiency through handgun range qualification.
This is a renewal course, not a replacement for initial handgun training. Completion of the course does not automatically renew a firearms endorsement; the individual must also complete the applicable DCJS renewal process.
4 hours of classroom retraining or practical exercises, plus required range training and handgun requalification.
Range qualification: Required — 75% minimum.
Written examination: For firearms classroom training, the regulation requires separate testing with a 70% minimum, passed before range training. However, 07R also permits a practical-exercise retraining format.
Our focus is a strong foundation: understanding your responsibilities, asking good questions, and learning in a supportive environment.
Registration documents: Bring a government-issued photo ID, your DCJS registration and firearms-endorsement information, and the endorsement expiration date. Range equipment: Bring the handgun for which you need qualification, a belt and strong-side directional-draw holster, three magazines or two speed loaders, and matching ammunition. The basic DCJS handgun range-equipment standard lists 100 rounds; confirm the complete ammunition requirement for your scheduled retraining session with the school. Additional proposed school instructions: Bring approved eye and hearing protection, closed-toe shoes, appropriate range clothing, and any additional equipment identified in the course confirmation. Follow the school’s separate classroom and range check-in instructions.
For the ordinary renewal pathway, students should have an existing applicable DCJS registration and handgun firearms endorsement and must complete retraining within the 90 days before the endorsement expires. A student who misses that retraining window may be required to complete entry-level training again. An expired endorsement should therefore be reviewed with DCJS rather than automatically accepted for routine 07R enrollment. Students must qualify for the firearm action type and caliber they carry or have access to while on duty. Contact the school before enrolling if your endorsement has expired or your eligibility is uncertain.
Confirm your date, location, and preparation instructions with the training team before attending.
