Range Qualification: Required — minimum passing score of 75%.
Additional Requirements: Mandatory familiarization and low-light range practice.
09E — Advanced Handgun: 14 Hours of Instruction
This course builds upon entry-level handgun training with advanced marksmanship, firearms safety, concealed carry laws, civil and criminal liability, use of force, firearms considerations in close-protection operations, and advanced decision-making.
Written Examination: Required — minimum passing score of 70%.

Course description

Entry-Level Handgun provides foundational handgun training for individuals pursuing a Virginia DCJS firearms endorsement in applicable private-security registration categories. These include private investigators, armored car personnel, and other categories identified by DCJS. It can also serve as the initial handgun-training component for students pursuing armed personal protection specialist work. 07E is not the same course as 75E — Security Officer Handgun.
Instruction covers safe handgun handling, firearm care and maintenance, ammunition identification and management, range safety, marksmanship fundamentals, low-light familiarization, use of force, criminal and civil liability, negligent-discharge prevention, judgmental shooting, and lead-exposure awareness.
Hours required: 16 hours of handgun classroom instruction, excluding the written examination. Required range training and qualification are additional; the range-qualification standard does not prescribe a fixed minimum number of range hours.
Written examination: Required, with a minimum passing score of 70%. Students must pass the firearms classroom examination before participating in range training.
Range qualification: Required, with a minimum passing score of 75%. Required familiarization and low-light range practice must also be completed, although those portions are not scored.
Students must complete all required instruction and successfully meet the applicable examination, practical, and range-qualification requirements. Missed instruction must be made up before training completion can be credited.

Learning with purpose.

Our focus is a strong foundation: understanding your responsibilities, asking good questions, and learning in a supportive environment.

What to bring

Students should bring:

  • Bring a valid government-issued photo ID
  • A pen and notebook
  • Your DCJS identification or registration number if already assigned, and any enrollment documents requested by the school.

For the range:

  • A suitable handgun
  • A belt with a strong-side directional-draw holster
  • Three magazines for a semiautomatic handgun or two speed loaders for a revolver. The DCJS equipment list specifies 100 rounds of ammunition. Confirm whether additional ammunition is required for your scheduled training or additional qualification attempts.

Bring eye and hearing protection, closed-toe shoes, and clothing appropriate for the range conditions. Confirm firearm suitability and any equipment-loan arrangements with the school before class.
Follow the instructor’s firearm check-in instructions. Do not bring live ammunition into the classroom firearms-training environment.

Prerequisites

No previous handgun course is identified as a prerequisite in the published 07E training standard. Before enrolling, confirm that 07E is the correct course for your intended registration category. New armed security officer/courier applicants are required to complete 75E — Security Officer Handgun, rather than substituting 07E.
Applicants seeking DCJS registration must be at least 18 years old, be a United States citizen or legal resident alien, and meet the applicable registration requirements. These are registration eligibility requirements, not a guarantee of approval after completing training.
Students must be legally eligible to possess the firearms and ammunition used during training.

Confirm your date, location, and preparation instructions with the training team before attending.
